# Vicks VapoRub and Erectile Dysfunction

[Home](/)/ Vicks VapoRub and Erectile Dysfunction

Guide

No. It does not work, and unlike most of the folk remedies in this category, this one can hurt you.

That deserves a direct answer at the top rather than five paragraphs down. If you found this idea in a video with a large view count, you were not being careless. You were looking for something you could do tonight without telling anyone.

The boundary here, as everywhere on this site: diagnosis and medical treatment of ED belong with a physician. Paul is not a physician and does not prescribe. His work is the sexual and psychological side, alongside that care.

## Where the claim came from

From a sensation, not a study. Menthol and camphor create an intense cooling-then-warming feeling and can make skin look flushed. Flushed skin looks like blood flow, and everyone knows erections are about blood flow, so the inference writes itself.

It spread through short video content, where a vivid physical claim outperforms a careful one. There is no trial, no clinical series, and no manufacturer indication behind it. The label does not mention erections because nobody has ever shown an effect on them.

## Why surface sensation is not an erection

An erection is a deep vascular event. Nerve signals trigger nitric oxide release, smooth muscle inside the corpora cavernosa relaxes, arterial inflow rises, and the expanding tissue compresses the veins that would drain it. That is what makes rigidity.

A topical irritant acts on nerve endings in the skin, several layers away from any of that machinery. It changes what you feel on the outside. It does not relax smooth muscle inside the shaft, and superficial redness is not inflow into erectile tissue.

## The genuine risk

This is the part the videos leave out. Genital skin is thinner than the chest skin the product was designed for, and the glans, inner foreskin and urethral opening are mucosal surfaces that absorb far more.

Documented consequences of applying mentholated and camphor-containing ointments to this area include chemical burns, contact dermatitis, prolonged burning, and swelling painful enough to send men to urgent care. Camphor is toxic in meaningful amounts, particularly across broken skin. And whatever you apply can transfer to a partner's genital tissue or, by hand, to an eye.

A remedy with no evidence of benefit and a real chance of injury is a bad trade at any price. If you have already used it and have pain, blistering or swelling, stop and see a doctor rather than waiting it out.

## What the search is really about

Almost nobody typing this believes in menthol. They believe that raising this with a physician would be worse than the problem. That belief is the thing actually costing you, and it is close to universal, since most men wait years.

Meanwhile ED is one of the earliest visible signals of vascular disease. Treating it as a bedroom embarrassment rather than a health finding is the genuinely risky decision in this story, not the ointment.

## What actually helps

A physician visit first: blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, testosterone where indicated, and a medication review, since several common prescriptions suppress erections, covered in [medications that cause ED](/guides/medications-that-cause-erectile-dysfunction). Treatment options, if needed, are theirs to prescribe.

Then the half medicine does not reach. If you are firm alone and not with a partner, or the pill works while sex still feels like a test, that is the anxiety loop, and it responds to training. See [sexual therapy for erectile dysfunction](/guides/sexual-therapy-for-erectile-dysfunction) and the clinical page, [erectile dysfunction](/specialties/erectile-dysfunction). Sessions are available to men in New York and Connecticut.

This page is education, not treatment, and reading it does not create a therapist–client relationship. If you are in crisis, call or text 988.

FAQ

## Frequently asked questions

Does Vicks VapoRub help with erectile dysfunction?

No. There is no clinical evidence that applying a mentholated chest rub to the penis improves erectile function, and the product is not intended or labeled for that use. What people feel is a strong skin sensation, not improved blood flow into the erectile tissue.

Why does it feel like something is happening?

Menthol and camphor activate cold and irritant nerve receptors in the skin. That produces a vivid tingling and sometimes visible surface redness. Surface sensation and surface flushing are not the same as the deep vascular filling that produces an erection, which is why the sensation does not translate into function.

Is it actually dangerous?

It can cause real harm. Genital skin, and especially the glans and inner foreskin, is thin and absorbs more than the chest does. Reported consequences include chemical irritation, burning, contact dermatitis and painful inflammation. Camphor is toxic if it reaches broken skin or mucous membranes in quantity, and there is added risk of transferring it to a partner's genital or eye tissue.

What should I do instead?

See a physician about the erections themselves, because ED is often an early sign of vascular disease. If the medical side has been checked and sex is still going badly, the anxiety and avoidance pattern is its own problem and responds to structured behavioral work.

## There is a version of this that does not involve your medicine cabinet.

One honest conversation, with someone whose whole practice is men's sexual health, gets further than any topical ever will.
